Old Surrenden Manor

The Manor of Old Surrenden alias Bethersden.

This manor was formerly the original seat of the family Surrenden. In the 14th Century, John de Surrenden married Agnes de Pluckley who was the heiress of the Manor of Pluckley. This entitled John to the possession of the manor. In 1371, the son of John and Agnes, John de Surrenden, who was living in Pluckley, erected a new mansion on the site of the old Pluckley mansion and called it Surrenden. It is possible that the Bethersden manor was called Old Surrenden from this period.
